A new chapter in the story of Chilton and Windlestone has begun with the launch of Our Heritage at the Pavilion, a new heritage centre created to celebrate and preserve the history of the local community.

Based at the Miners Welfare Pavilion, the centre brings together photographs, documents, films and artefacts that tell the story of the people and places that have shaped the area. Its opening exhibition, Our Place, Our People, Our Heritage, explores the buildings, institutions and communities of the past, alongside the people who brought them to life.

The project has been made possible through the support of the local community and funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, NEAMsWTF, Durham County Council, The Green Energy Foundation and Livin as well as funding from The Miners Welfare Recreation Ground Trust.

The Pavilion will provide a place for people to discover the past, share their own memories and stories, and explore an archive containing thousands of records relating to Chilton and Windlestone. It marks the beginning of an ongoing project to ensure that the heritage of the area continues to be collected, shared and celebrated.
