WHAT IS IT

The Project

Our Place, Our People, Our Heritage is a project that preserves and transforms one of the town’s oldest buildings into a modern heritage centre celebrating the people, the places and the events that shaped our town.

The centre houses a flexible exhibition space, will provide facilities for the community, and host educational, and cultural events. And, is the home to our digital archive that will make thousands of photographs, documents, and heritage items publicly accessible.

THE PAVILLION

A Building at the Heart of the Community

Built in 1924, the Miners Welfare Pavilion is one of the oldest buildings in town and the first community space that was open to all residents, regardless of age or gender. Historically, the surrounding park has been the centre for leisure and sport in the town, being the home for our championship winning football and cricket teams, as well as the home of bowls, croquet and tennis.

Today, The Miners’ Welfare Pavilion has been transformed into a vibrant heritage centre, staying true to the original vision of an openly accessible community space whilst creating a perfect place for the history of our town to come to life.
